Online Resources

Here is a selection of open access, online resources in neonatal care, for either health professionals, students or parents:   

  • Book Web Companion for the book Petty, J, Whiting. L and Roberts. S (2024) A guide to neonatal care- A handbook for health professionals. See the Book web companion site here   Each chapter in the book has a supplementary information file for download, with extra information, a glossary and additional online resources. The book itself can be accessed through the publisher site

  • Book Web Companion for the book, Boxwell, Petty and Kaiser (2020) Neonatal intensive Care Nursing (3rd edition)– See the Book web companion site here & click on the ‘Student tab’ at the top. Each chapter from the book has supplementary additional resources, case studies with answer guides and interactive exercises. The resource can also be accessed through the publisher site  (scroll down to Instructor and Student resources)

  • Neonatal Nursing- Knowledge to support learning in practice – This site, developed by Julia Petty, is hosted on the University of Hertfordshire website and serves as a repository of resources in key areas of neonatal care useful for anyone learning about this specialty or those who require an update of the specific learning points to apply to practice.

  • ‘A Stay in the Neonatal Unit’- An animated guide to your role as a parent and what to expect – This excellent animation was developed by South West Neonatal Network in conjunction with the NICU Foundation. Aimed at parents, it provides a very useful picture for those learning / working in the neonatal unit of what parents go through during their time there. 

  • My Baby’s Brain An animation series explaining infant brain and breathing development

  • The European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) – A Pan-European organisation and network to represent the interests of small, sick & preterm infants and their families. 

  • European Standards of Care for Newborn HealthTo address the disparities in the care of preterm and ill babies, this project presents European reference standards on a range of topics.

  • Cochrane Neonatal – This link takes you to the complete list to neonatal specific Cochrane reviews which are systematic reviews of available research in many specific areas of neonatal care.

  • National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU) – All publications – The NPEU undertake many vital research studies in perinatal and neonatal care and you can view the list of publications here. The main site also details the past and current research trials and studies undertaken.

  • National Institute for Health Research – Neonatal Research Studies – This page contains links to all neonatal related research funded by the NIHR

  • Stanford Newborn Nursery website and photo gallery: A useful US website comprising information / guidelines for health professionals but most importantly, is the Photo Gallery that contains a wide variety of images, audio clips and videos of various aspects of newborn assessment with supporting explanations.
